10 daily habits that will help you connect with God: Turning chores into worship
Updated: Feb 14, 2022
Howdy! This habit is one that has probably helped me stay connected to God this most since moving to College Station in August. Why? Because as a Christian, the Holy Spirit dwells inside me, meaning that He is with with me wherever I am, as I mentioned in the last few posts. And something that I've learned about being a temple of the Holy Spirit is that anytime can be time with Jesus. Wait, Jess. I thought you said you have to spend time with Jesus privately? Not exactly. God does expect you to set aside a time daily talk to Him and read His Word, but that doesn't mean you can't spend time with Him outside of that. In fact, He delights in getting to be apart of every minute of your day. Worship is one way we can center our day around the Lord!
But before we dive in, let's answer this question:
What is worship and do we do it?
Thanks for asking. When most people think of worship, they think of singing in church. This is definitely a popular and beautiful way to worship, but there are many creative ways to honor God because that's what worship is: to honor or show reverence for God (according to Merriam-Webster, paraphrased).
So, if worshipping God means honoring and showing reverence to God, why do we do it? Simply, because He is worthy of it. Revelation 5:12 (ESV) says, "saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”' But more specifically, the Lamb, who John describes in Revelation, is Jesus, and He is worthy because of the sacrifice He made for us so that we may have relationship with God (hince, why John calls Him 'the Lamb'). And God is worthy because He is the Father; the one who sent His only Son to die for us so that we may have eternal life (John 3:16). THE GOSPEL! THAT'S why He is worthy. Because He is a loving God who made a way for you & I to have a relationship with Him. HE SAVED OUR LIVES! If that doesn't make you want to worship God, I don't know what will.
Now that we have an understanding of worship, let's jump into this thing.
Daily habit #4: Turning chores into worship
Testimony Time!
As I mentioned in the beginning, turning chores into worship has helped me to stay connected to God since I moved to College Station and here's why: it's hard for me accept grace. When life gets super busy during the school semesters, it's difficult for me to keep up with my quiet time routine, which makes my perfectionist personality feel like a failure. But the thing is, God doesn't expect perfection from me, He only expects obedience. And even when I'm not obedient, His grace covers me.
To help remind myself of this, I started to play my favorite worship playlists throughout the day: getting ready for class, doing laundry, doing the dishes, riding in the car, and getting ready for bed. Not because if I did this, I would feel better about myself, but because if I do this I am intentionally making time to meet with the Lord, even if it doesn't look like my normal routine. Remember, if you are a Christian, the Holy Spirit dwells inside of you and will meet you wherever you are.
Now, I don't only sing praises to the Lord. But I also take this time to pray and simply allow God to speak back to me through the lyrics of the worship jams I have playing. Spending time with God in this way truly stirs my affections for Him!
Call to Action
I know this habit has been a short and sweet one, but that's truly because that's what it is: short and sweet! I encourage you to try it this week. On days that you get lost in time and your routine slips away, offer yourself some grace, turn on your favorite worship music and start talking to Jesus. Your cup can be filled that way as well.
XOXO,
Jess :)
